On my deck I have five clematis that are in large wooden half barrels. They are doing nicely but could use more root room. I cannot afford the great big pottery planters - they are way too much money for me. I know people plant in metal trash cans, but I am hesitant to use metal here in the Pacific Northwest because it gets so cold in the winter.
Has anyone ever used a large plastic garbage can for planting in? I could put holes in the bottom of it for drainage and set it on a plant dolly and it would be easy to move.
Any other ideas for extra large planting containers would be appreciated.

Wow, Have you done this before?
This was my first try and they've been planted for almost two years now and are doing fine.
