Thanks to the wonderful info on DG, I learned that what attacked my euonymous, seemingly overnight, is scale. The plants were pretty far gone, completely covered, every leaf! Since I had plans to make some changes to that bed, anyway, I have removed the plants, roots, and cleaned up as best I can. I would like to put down mulch so it looks good for the rest of this year, but I am sure I missed some affected leaves, etc.
What should I put down on the soil to keep these critters from spreading to the rest of the garden, or is that a danger? Some of the old bed will be mulch, some will be planted in grass. Any advice?
