Can I paint on a plate that has already been baked or glazed

Houston, TX

My mother's favorite pattern in the Vallerta dinnerware from Pier 1 that was discontinued in 2006. My parents' 35th wedding anniversary is coming up and I wanted to buy a plate from that pattern (she doesn't have very many pieces and uses them to decorate the kitchen, not for actual use) and have their name and wedding date painted on it - to display in the kitchen. Here is a picture of the plate (http://images.replacements.com/images/images5/china/P/pier_1_vallarta_dinner_plate_P0000270132S0035T2.jpg). Now, my main question is, can I do this since this plate has already been glazed and baked (or whatever it was, sorry, I'm not sure of the actual terms or how this plate was finalized).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
