I have three Jackmanii on a fence next to each other. They are all in bloom so I was taking pics and I noticed that some of the blooms have 4 petals, some have 5 petals and some have 6 petals. Is this normal?
If you look closely at this pic you can see some with 4,5 and 6.
Number of petals
This is normal. My Jackmanii does that too.
Mine, too.
Cool. I thought maybe I had mixed up some labels. I try so hard to keep everything labeled and invariably something always gets "unlabeled" or "mislabeled".
Is that unique to Jackmanni or do other clems do it too?
Others may do it but it's most obvious with Jackmanii. Some never do it and remain constant number of sepals also known as tepals..
Here's a link to a clematis thread by a former DG person who explains that what we think of as petals are actually sepals: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/949748/ (not that it changes a thing!).
