How do I remove stains from stainless?

Deep East Texas, TX(Zone 8a)

That sounds like a contradiction. Stainless should not be stained.

This little two cup teapot is a favorite of mine. Apparently something splashed on it and I didn't catch it to clean it before the burner was turned on.

The discoloration is visible due to the stain. The spill has been cleaned off.

Is there any way I can remove the stain without scratching the surface?

My stainless sink also has a small dark spot that I would like to remove. I have no idea what caused that discoloration.

I would definitely appreciate any suggestions... thanks ~ pod
