I would like to know if it is OK to cut my Irises down to the ground now?
I have Mums planted with them and they need sun light.
Will it hurt the Irises by doing this?
Cutting Irises Down
Cut the stalks down. Leave the foliage as they will need that for help on next yrs bloom. New increases are your plant next yr. Move the mums?
When would you cut the foliage back?
Not really on bearded irises. Some foliage will turn brown & remove those leaves.
That is what I have bearded irises. So what you are telling me I can cut them down?
I would advise against it, only remove browning leaves. the leaves are vital to the health of the plant.
I always trim mine down by half. that gives them enough leaf for continuing to grow for next years bloom, but cutting them all the way to the ground will kill them. If they are ready to divide, you can cut them back even further and thin them out. I have a good article on dividing iris on my web site, www.irismelodies.com
