CLOSED: Fuzzballs on rose bush?

Highland Heights, KY(Zone 6a)

I posted this on the native plant forum, but got no replies so far--anyone know what these green fuzzballs are on a wild rose plant?

Thanks!

Definitely not Tillandsia of any kind. It appears to be a gall which is caused by pest insects.

Plant galls are formed with the fibers of the plant, so a closer image would really help clear this up. It could be a parasitic plant as themoonhowl suggested. Themoonhowl was not saying this is Spanish moss, themoonhowl was simply pointing out that this items has a similar structure and could be another tillandsia.

That said, I just googled "plant gall" and Wikipedia shows this image titled "Rose bedeguar gall on a wild rose in summer." I think this is probably the same thing:

from the images at the bottom of this page:

And more info on the galls, called Diplolepis rosae:

Ogon, if i had chosen plant gall...it would be lichens...if i had chosen lichens it would be Tillandsia...I chose a possible Tillandsia...so of course it is Rose bedeguar....GRIN

Themoonhowl, you are too funny :). You just made me laugh! At least you put your ideas out there for everyone else to run with. If not for that, a lot of questions would go unsolved :). I really thought the image looked like some kind of Tillandsia as well after your post! But just for the heck of it I googled lichen and found nothing close, and googled gall and there it was...

Thanks, Ogon. At least I can provide the comic relief....I don't mind being wrong...just as long as someone gets it right. Guess this is what comes of having a mind like an unsorted Bookmark file....grin

What a fascinating article! Yep, that's it, tiny wasps laying eggs in the plant. Amazing!
LOL, Moon, I like to make people laugh, too...maybe it's a cajun thing, huh? We're so silly from eating all that spicy seafood (which I miss terribly).

You can always do a good corned beef with Zatarans crab and shrimp boil....mighty tasty...GRIN Sometimes in the off season we will do a "veggie boil" corn, potatoes, carrots, onions, garlic and mushrooms...only thing missing is the crawfish, Cher.

Mmm, thanks for the tip! I remember eating the potatoes that were thrown into the pot with the crabs, and they were yummy!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

You are too welcome...just remember the potatoes will soak up lots of seasoning, but since they take the longest to boil, you could add the seasoning when ya throw in the rest of the veggies....le bon temps roulet....grin

Oh now you're making me want to do a shrimp boil again! Me and Cheryl just mentioned it in the past couple of days. It's so easy and so tasty. Great for the neighborhood get together....

Hi Doug...you can toss those veggies and shrimp in the same pot, or do your veggies before...either way they go really well with shrimp too. Yum!

We've done it before and has always been a big hit!
