evergreen- continual blooming 3-4" perrenial

Bayonne, NJ(Zone 6a)

I'm new to perrenials. A friend of ours asked me "What perrenial would stay green all winter and bloom all summer that is good for a bordering/edging around the lawn". He's tired of the usual annuals i.e begonia's, impatients etc. I already have some lamium for him.
Thanks for helping

Carol, I know that my coral bells stay nice even in the winter here in sothern NJ. They do have a pretty cool looking stalk with white little flower all summer long. Some can get pretty big (wide, not tall) but I have them in the front of my borders. Here is what is in the DG database, I will get you a pic of it soon. http://davesgarden.com/plants/go/1549.

Carol, that's a tall order - almost every plant is going to need some rest period, if not complete dormancy, at least a blooming period that doesn't last all season.

Many folks look for companion plants that can "tag team" each other to provide year-round interest. Is your friend looking for something for shade or sun, or a mixture?

Several varieties of daylilies are evergreen or semi-evergreen (depending on the climate), and can be chosen to bloom from early to late season; several will rebloom. By carefully choosing them for specific characteristics, your friend can create an almost-continuous display of blooms throughout the summer, and evergreen foliage in the colder months. Daffodils can be interplanted among them to jump-start the blooming season even earlier.

Hardy ice plant (Delosperma cooperi) blooms cotinuously all summer and is mostly an evergreen succulant. It's only 3-4" tall but spreads outward indefinately. I absolutely love mine. You can see a pic in my journal here:http://davesgarden.com/gj/jody/viewentry/5707.html

I hear Arum italicum makes a great companion to hosta plants :) Carol, that might make a good combination, too - hostas in the summer, arum in the colder months. Lots of foliage interest, and blooms to boot.

Happyoma, you have a bunch of it, huh? If you ever need someone to take some of it off your hands, just let me know (grin)....
