Sun tolerant Hosta?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm looking for a full sun tolerant hosta with chartruese leaves.
Is there such a thing?

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Sunpower has been reported to tolerate sun. I have one that Noreaster gave me. Mine is not in full sun all day but it does get a few hours of the hot afternoon sun.

Thomaston, CT

I have Piedmont Gold that does well in half day sun....

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

In general, gold / yellow hostas, white variegated hostas and leaves with more substance can tolerate more sun. As a rule of thumb, with more sun, a blue hosta will be greener (the wax melts faster), greens are a lighter green and gold varieties will brighten. Fragrant hostas do need 4 to 6 hours of sun to fully develop their flower fragrance.

I'd recomend 'Sun Power'

My Sum & Substance is in fs and is fine.

S&S is an idea, but may be too large

My 'On Stage" gets filtered-to birght light from sun up till 2, then full sun from 2 till sunset. It's been there a little over a year now.

I like it!

I have some June in full sun doing fine. Of course - they need more water.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

"June" is the name of the hosta?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Have that one too...but not in full sun.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Does fine, as long as it's watered. Mine is easily within hose range.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I have Sun Power and Guacamole. Love them both. Sun Power is more yellow/chartreuse if that's the color you're looking for.

Thanks, SOJ

Sun Power gives you that different shape too. I have Guacamole and like it a lot. It was hosta of the year one year.

Found these recommendations on an old Hosta forum thread

Decisions, decisions.... I need a vote....

These will be planted around a sand cherry

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I like Sun Power but don't own it and Zounds is one I planted last year. So far I like it but it seems to be a smaller hosta.

What the heck is chartruese leaves? I have 3 different ones that get sun from sun up to 1. The tags are with the plants, so I have no clue of the name.

Thomaston, CT

Have not grown any of those, but Zounds looks like my fav......

"chartruese" is a color halfway between yellow and green that was named because of its resemblance to the green color of one of the French liqueurs called green chartreuse, introduced in 1764

Oui oui.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jen - check out brother stefan which advertised as sun resistant - sun and substance does get big i have a huge one. will have to look into sun power - zounds is one of the liners i got this year so too young yet.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Anyone ever buy hosta "liners"??? How small are they?

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

The ones I got were small....here's a picture of approx. the size you get.

jen i have bought about 80+ over the last year - i pot them up and "plant" in the ground and by the next year they are ready to go in the garden. i use a growers soil called metromix 510 that polly recommended.

Thanks!

Ended up buying Stained Glass

Most other sources say "extremely fragrant" so that sold me on it over Sun Power which has no fragrance

Thomaston, CT

Cheerful looking hosta....

Lexington, MA(Zone 6a)

I planted Solar Flare hosta in the sun in July. It was described as sun tolerant and it is. I agree that Guacamole handles a fair amount of sun if you want an even larger one. Jury is out on my smaller ones handling the sun.
