Browser won't close ??

A couple times in the last week my browser wouldn't close. I had to "end process" of Windows Internet Explorer through the task manager. Then the task manager would seem to get hung up leaving images on the desktop. Both times I had to completely shut my computer down to clear all things out. Has anyone had this happen? Is it a virus? I have paid version of AVG running and have scanned my whole computer and it's not showing any virus.
