Old wood molds are for... ?

So yup, student found this one at an antique store, paid $30 for it I think, and is using it as a mold to make ceramic ornaments.

It's made of wood, and it's not terribly big... no more than 4". It's got the number 46 carved into the back, which I think is maybe just an old ID number.
