I purchased Julia Correvan from Wal-m several years ago...didn't mark it thinking I'll remember...wrong. Is this her? She is a gorgeous deep red/purple liver color, small flower. The other photos on here is more bright red/fuchsia color.
Is this Julia Correvan
Although there's no apparent shade in your photo I am wondering if the clematis is growing in shade or partial shade.
Here's a link to some close-up shots to Julia Correvon and two others, if it's of any help to you: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/clematis/msg0607235219112.html
I did check Plant Files first and none of the photos seemed as dark as yours but location, culture and temperatures may play a part in differences with coloring.
Regardless of the name, it is a beautiful color.
Indeed! It's beautiful.
Compare it to this photo and see what you think. It's certainly a lot closer in color and the one on this link is in full sun.

How big of a pot should I put a Clem if I want to keep it over the winter in it? I am in zone 6b.
Let me research it tonight and post tomorrow.
Plant in one gallon pots, be sure to use bone meal and remember to plant at least 2" deep and angle the plant towards the support where it will grow (45 degree angle). Make sure you give it sufficient water without drowning it and give it a good amount of mulch to keep the roots cool.
Good luck, Marie.
I would have thought a bigger pot Pirl.
I have plenty of them here and the bone meal.
Thanks
From what I recall of past threads most seem to start off in the one gallon pots. If it's a typical black nursery pot I would put that in another lighter (maybe ceramic) pot to keep the heat of the sun away from it or the roots could get too hot.
Ok, got that too...lol
Just so you know...(nothing like failure to be a good teacher)...I tried two very expensive ones in "pretty" pots - both appear dead.
It looks more like Clematis "Etoille Violette" to me..my first instinct was "Polish Spirit" but the coloring look more like EV
