Potato Question

Old Lyme, CT(Zone 6a)

Can anyone tell me what might produce best in my area and a source for seed potatoes, shallots, onions etc? I live in zone 6, on the shoreline. Thanks.

I bought seed potatoes from the Maine Potato Lady a couple of years ago.

Don't forget tomatoes!

I lost my husband two years ago and know nothing about veggie gardening. We have a huge garden and it's time to get it planted again. I always took care of the almost 500 feet of flower beds and had the vegetables delivered to the kitchen. I was just wondering what varieties might grow better in zone 6 than others. Thanks so much.

angelica, I'm very sorry for your loss and will help in any way I can.
I assume you have a place to plant and someone to rotatill for you so...what would you like to grow? I grow(and you can too) corn, cukes, mato's, green beans, wax beans, summer squash, winter squash,....just about anything you want. Are you looking for specific varieties? Or just places to buy? If you don't need lots of seed I would gladly share some of mine with you...I always buy to much! ^_^

Thank you. It's been a very difficult two years and i'm just trying to get back to some kind of normalcy. Getting the veggie garden going again and getting back out in the flower beds will help.
We have a fenced area several hundred square feet and I have a tiller.
I bought seeds for summer and winter squash, tomatoes, eggplant peppers, beets, carrots, beans, peas, soybeans etc. We've never grown potatoes, onions or shallots. I was wondering what varieties would grow best and yes, the best place to buy them.

For Onions I like 'Cabernet', 'Ruby Red' and 'Red Wing' for reds, they have good flavor and good storage.
For whites...well there are several. It's a matter of taste, bold, strong, sweet, mild....you have to read the descriptions. I look for ones that have a growing season of no more than 120 days and have good storage life. "Prince" is one that comes to mind along with 'Gunnison', and 'Copra'.
Do you have a Agway or Hardware store near by? Maybe a Home Depot or Lowes? They sell onoins, shallots and taters at most if you don't want to do a mail order.

Pinetree Seeds offers a great potato . .Shepody. It is a russet type, super for baking and mashing. It keeps quite well also. We plant them every year up here in the northwest hills of CT.
