Do I Need a Router?

I bought a used laptop that has bluetooth wireless. I can get on the internet at McDonalds. But I can't at home, altho I have DSL. Shouldn't it pick up my DSL internet without having to be wired into my modem? Do I need a router to use the wireless internet feature at home? If so, what kind?

And if I get a router, then would my laptop sync up with my desktop and pull files off it?
