Has anyone ever tried growing caesalpinia gilliesii - desert bird of paradise - in SC? I know this plant prefers arid, mediterranian climates, but on the plantfile page there are 2 reports - N. Augusta and Florence - of places in SC where it has been successfully grown. It's naturalized in parts of Oklahoma where temps last winter were below 0. I have some sandy areas in my yard where I'm hoping it could survive.

Don't know if this will help, but I grow C. mexicana and C. pulcherrima. I have very sandy soil and they don't need a lot of extra water.

Thanks, Barb. They are related and I think my 'desert' bird of paradise would do well in my sandy backyard, especially since it's naturalized in humid E Texas. Now I need to shop the internet for seeds...
