Hi, all. I have a small NOID maple that has been in its pot for about 12 years. It has been sitting in the back yard in mostly shade for 6 of those years. A couple of weeks ago, my DH and I tried to move it to a new location and found one of the roots had grown out of the drainage hole and into the ground. The root is about an inch thick. Can we just cut this root off and move the plant?

I do it all the time. I will also take the plant out of the pot, wash off all the soil, trim up some of the root and re-place the plant back in the pot for additional years. I would recommend doing this before the bud brakes.
Thank you very much for the input. Can we leave the root or should we dig that out, too?
Depends on how much work you want to do. For me I just cut it off.
I wasn't sure if it would grow from the root. Thank you once again.
The 'Japanese Maple' will most likely "NOT" grow from the root that is under the soil.
(It's "not" a 'weed' that spreads through roots).
