A hot sunny garden.................

North Ipswich, Qld, Australia

SOLVED MY FRIENDS: Thank-You heaps.

Hi Guys,

I need suggestions on plants to plant in this long garden.
It gets very hot sun from about 10.30 am till 5 pm in the afternoon.

The people before me said they tried heaps of plants but they kept dying.
I would like colour in it if possible, but I will plant anything that will live.

I do not remember the plants they tried as they couldn't remember many.

Do Coleus love the straight sun, no shade?

Any help will be appreciated.
Debi

penstemons, lavenders english & french, seem to like full sun.
roses do well in full sun in my garden but might be too thirsty for yours.
I guess it depends on how much water is available

Thanks Heaps dalfyre,

I can put drip bottles with the roses, so the roots are always getting water.

Do you think that would work as I love Roses too.

Maybe I can put a mixture of all the plants you mentioned.

Thanks, Debi

Deb ...dig some cow manure into that soil.
If you can't dig it in just throw it down on top and leave the worms to take it down.
A nice mulch would be wonderful if you can afford it, but a few inches of cow poo or even horse poo at a pinch will help the soil.
It looks a bit hungry to me but it may just be the picture.
Good luck ...roses are hungry so if the soil is poor it will be a bit of a struggle to keep them happy.

Here take a look and see what you think.

Coleus (the colourful leaf ones) like shade.

failing the above suggestions if it proves to be a very difficult location, some plants will still grow there, there's a plant for every garden situation.
It does look like an excellent place for a succulent garden, thrive on neglect type plants.
Agaves, cacti, pigface, echeveria, Kalanchoe, Euphorbias just to name a few

just thinking. ;)

I had wonderful success with Blue Lagoon Rosemary which is very hardy and turns on a show of beautuful blues blooms quite frequently.
I made a Rosemary walk with mine and kept the family in Rosemary all year round.
Deb you are a succulent fan I suggest you go with what lucas said.
Perhaps a herb here and there for colour and fragrance.

I'd always thought that too Lucas, but I have seem some absolutely beautiful specimens growing in full sun. Having said that though, Debi, I don't think I'd be putting them there.

I agree with Chrissy - the main reason the previous people had trouble growing anything there appears to be that the soil is desperately in need of organic matter. I think you're going to struggle with it too unless you take the time to mix some through.

Yeah, I will get some cow poo or horse poo and take the time to prepare the garden before using it.

Thanks Guys.

funny I was thinking about your garden & wondered if the soil has been poisoned...
if every other plant tried there has died it seems a bit suspect to me.
Do weeds grow there?
Otherwise digging in compost would be a big help.
try looking up xeriscaping for more ideas - there are loads of plants that like it hot :)

Ok will do, dalfyre.

Thanks for that idea.
