hard pruning leucothoe

The leucothoe in our church garden is so happy it's become huge and taking up too much space. I know standard pruning would be to selectively prune. But is it okay to hard prune?

We have leucothoe at the public library near here. It was pruned back hard by the county and recovered. Of course, there are 7 plants in enough space for 2! I'll check on it again next time I'm over there.
