Installing Updates Windows XP problem

I had my computer completely wiped 2 weeks ago as it was running slowly. I have since reinstalled all my programs and have been online. I am running Windows XP.
When my laptop is plugged in and I "shutdown" I get a message that the computer will shut down automatically, do not unplug, installing update 1 of 101????????? I have unplugged it and tonight I try to shutdown and get the same message only now it is installing update 8 or 89?
Why do I need updates when I just had my system completely overhauled down to the bare bones and is there a way to stop this incessant "updating" if I don't need them?
