Are they worth the money? I want some outstanding cannas for extra large container (36") plants. I saw Stuttgart in Toronto last summer and it was really impressive. It was in a container and the container was located in open shade on the north side of a building. I was surprised by that. It was growing well. There were no flowers, but the container looked gorgeous anyway.
Phaison and Tropicanna Black and Stuttgart
I say any canna is worth the money.. The spread so fast in one season you really only need one of each.. By the fallowing spring you'll have plenty, in some cases i've had more then i could even plant :)

Sounds like good advice from a canna fan!
'Pretoria' and 'Pink Sunburst' are ever favs of mine in the varigates.
I'm a huge fan of the Stuttgart, bought 2 this past spring only for them to pretty much be mold when i got them, still hoping i could save them i tried to grow them.. well nothing came up (not surprised) wont be ordering anything from that site again... I live in canada and most places wont ship roots here so I really dont have a place to get some :(.. Maybe one day..
jen
Oh. That's a shame you don't have a source. I dare say that probably a few get shipped in surreptitiously. Perhaps a state side friend? Its probably the phytosanitary permit that causes growers to not ship to Canada. Its a costly endeavor to get the necessary permitting.
I get things shipped in trades all the time.. Never had a problem with them coming over.. But yes its the permits that keep companies from sending them.. I do have a few friends state side, and that just might have to be the way i go. The only place in canada i've found them clearly wasn't a good place to buy them lol.. I think i might order them from plant delights, They have a bunch of things i want, and if left up to me i could spend well over $1000 at that place.. However hubby sees things differently.. :) Oh while someone has to have a sense of reason..

Nope never mind i just checked the site and there gone now :(

I love all canna! My yard is full of them. It's hard finding a place to get them that does not carry the canna virus. Many of the pinks are beautiful! Traditionally the yellows, reds, and oranges are what people are used too, but there are so many beautiful pinks, salmons, creams, etc. I had the Stuttgarts for a while, but in Florida, no matter where I put them, the white part of the leaves always seemed to burn and crinkle up. They have become harder to find now. Mine eventually bit the dust. I cross pollinate a lot of mine to see what comes out of each seed planted (just for fun) Pretoria is also beautiful, even without the blooms. Get them from a reliable source, the ones I've seen at Target, Home Depot, and Lowes, all have virus. There's a green and white striped one, with bright yellow blooms, that is also very attractive with or without the blossoms.
:)
I'm addicted.
Mary i'm like you, just addicted.. I just love them all, I am a sucker for seeds, cause i love to see what i can get. I once heard about someone that ordered canna banana seeds, planted them and got one that was quit darker then the other ones.. Its those hidden gems i love to see. I know most people want to have the same plant as the mother plant, but not me. I havent tried to cross mine yet. I wanted to give it a try this summer, but with a new little one that came aug 1 this past summer gardening wasn't on the top of my list.. I have read about doing it but i just left it to the bees :) I ordered a few more seeds this summer so i'm excited to see whats to come

Jen,
I have a 5 yr old grandson who loves to be in the yard with me. I give him a soft paintbrush and let him go from flower to flower to cross pollinate. He thinks it's blast to look at the bees and help me out. Whatever turns out, turns out. If I really like one, I'll split the rhizome to make more, otherwise I'll just enjoy!
Oh how cute.. I hope my daughter like to garden

I had the same problem with burning foliage marks on Canna "Stuttgart" in South Florida. I did have Canna "Phaison" back in 2007 and I thought it was worth the price if you like it's LOUD colors. I dug all mine up in 2008, because they were so much work in the summer fighting Canna Leaf Rollers. Have began to slowly add a few new ones into the yard. Gonna try to keep the numbers down so they are manageable.
I had MANY varieties of Cannas in my CA place. Traded a lot here at Daves. Lost them all in AZ. Im now in TN and starting all over. Not a flower on the place when we moved here.I bought Tropicanna Black and Tropicanna Gold last year just to have something colorful growing. I have, I hope, some Tropicanna Gold I can send you. If you want some send me your address. Dont worry about postage. Yes they do multiply fast. I purchased Tropicannas out of the first sent to the U S. I paid---- $72.00 each and I could hold both of them in the palm of my hand. Five years later I had 100 foot hedgerows of Tropicannas.
amorecuore - Sorry to hear that you had all that trouble with the leaf rollers. I had a similar problem with iris borers. About five years ago I threw in the towel and dug them all up and put them in the trash. I haven't yet replanted any iris. Maybe it's time I did. I could start with just a few and see what happens. How much shade should I put Stuttgart in? I was thinking of high open shade on the north side of a building, plenty of light but no direct sun.
RosalieR - $72.00? EACH? Oh my goodness. That's a true Canna lover. Tropicana Gold! Yes, Yes! I'll dmail you.
Seems like Canna leaf rollers are probably a problem for everyone in South Florida, although it's just during the warmer months of May - Sept. Surprisingly there are few Cannas available for purchase down here other than the Tropicanna Series at Lowes Or Home Depot. I've noticed their Cannas are always infested with Canna leaf rollers when I see them during the summer months. They're easy to control as long as you spray the plants every couple of weeks. You can't get lazy about it because they do their damage quite quickly.
Hard for me to guess on how much sun Canna Stuttgart can take in your climate. Your sun is not as intense/high in the sky like it is in this tropical climate. Humans will get a sunburn much faster down here and the same can be said for tender sensitive foliage. My safest advice would be to plant Stuttgart in a large pot for the first season and experiment with the sun exposure issue. Start with morning only sun, see how things go and adjust based on what you witness. After the first year you will definitely know how much sun it can handle in Ohio. In year two you could plant it in the ground "with confidence" knowing you're not going to have burn mark issues.
I have some Reblooming Bearded Iris down here even though they're not meant for Zone 10 and not sold locally. Don't get lots of blooms but enough to keep me happy. It's been my favorite flower from the North for as long as I can remember.
I had some Stuttgarts that did well for several years in a partially shaded area of my beds.. until my cat decided to use the area as a litterbox! Lost them all by the time I realized what was happening. Cats and cannas are NOT a good mix. I lost all my tropicannas this winter.. they were beautiful but the unexpected dry and extreme cold winter was more than they could take. I had some in pots in the garage but the door stayed open by mistake one night and froze everything in the garage. I would love to see a picture of that tropicanna headgerow.. bet it is beautiful!
My neighbor just cut down the three big pine trees that were making gardening in one corner of my yard difficult.. yea! Time to get that corner ready to plant .. now if I can find some cannas .. most gardeing places here don't have much this year.
