Best deicer for sidewalks - safe animals/vegetation/environ

Albany (again), NY(Zone 5b)

Hi there - figured this was the best forum for this type of question.

Can anyone recommend a good deicer product for the sidewalks. I have about 100 feet of sidewalk, including a bus stop that I want to keep safe and clear.

Prefer to find something that is gentler on the environment, especially since I have organic garden-beds near the edge of my yard. Also, we have a lot of dog-walkers.

I've seen many products advertised, but would like to know if any of you have personal recommendations. I also have a 2 yo who insists on helping me clear the sidewalks, while she doesn't eat the salt, she does insist in "helping" - as I found out yesterday.

Here's an article about de-icers...

Thank you so much - I like the kitty litter and sand ideas for traction - no impact on environment or pets or my gardens. If anyone else can recommend a specific product, I'd look forward to it!

I ordered some and will try it out. Hopefully it gets here before the next snow and I can get it applied to the sidewalk (not going to bother with the driveway) - more concerned about the sidewalk from safety perspective. I'll revert back with how well it works.

Happy holidays to everyone!

we like it.... with our slopped driveway it is the only way when it gets icy to be safe... rock salt unless it's the rough granules will just slide down into the road and not do a darn thing... just have to make sure it's below 35 when you apply or it will be like trying to walk on spray pam on a linoleum floor .... not good... and I think the directions say and hour and a half before the snow or ice comes.. good stuff though.. Randy even said the granular shaker works great if you miss putting the spray down first

Eh, wow - now I'm actually waiting for it to snow so I can try this stuff out - go figure.
