IPad ???

I am not real computer savvy and see a lot of these ipads being used. How do they operate?
If I purchased one do I have to order additional internet service? I have service in my home via cable and have a wireless router. I have a Kindle which is wireless and I think it picks up the signal using my router although it works even away from home. Would the ipad work the same way?
