Aloha Tobias,

I live in at close to sea level on Maui and I have two rose bushes, although they are not the David Austin type, just tea's. My roses struggle here - they bloom but just do not look as healthy as roses grown further up the mountain. I have kept them well fertilized and well sprayed for mildew and insects, but they don't live up to their potential at all. Looking around my area I haven't seen any rose bushes in other people's gardens, which should have told me something!

I will be watching to see what the folks (who are more expert gardeners than I) have to say about your question.

Good luck with your new move, and welcome to TZG!

China Roses and Tea Roses Rosa chinensis & Rosa x odorata do well in tropical areas.

They don't get the mildew that other Roses are plagued by here.

I have seen them do well in dry (leeward) areas as well as wet (windward) areas.
