How do I get computer to burn CD's

i have an HP desktop, with hp cd-writer (CD-RW), I follow the instructions but still can't burn any cd's.
I put the cd into the cd-writer, it starts but then says that there is a problem writing to the cd, the cd, that it is no longer writable, the cd is new ,never used. What am I doing wrong???
