Putting a sock on it

Kansas City, MO

A friend on Facebook belongs to several iris clubs. One of his friends is trying on reblooming iris a trick someone in Colorado uses. It could be useful for early blooming peonies. A sock is placed over the bud or bloom to prevent damage from heavy frost, light freezes. This or a covering like a sock could be useful for all kinds of flowers when we get those May freezes.

I have seen tissue paper wrapped flowers but never a sock. If anyone has tried this, did it help?

Sometimes like the Easter freeze of a couple of years ago nothing will help.

Interesting idea. wool? fleece?

Pictures my friend linked to on Facebook showed white socks of different sizes but mostly athletic tube ones so probably cotton. If you have a supply of wool ones they can get wet and still supply insulation where cotton will not. However I believe the protection was aimed more at temps and not wetness. That is one of the reasons I asked if anyone had tried the method. I know several on here belong to the various iris societies so was hoping for users to post.
