Bearded iris in Louisiana?

Houma, LA(Zone 9a)

Will bearded iris do well in hot, muggy Louisiana?

I'm not sure but I do know that that they do need cold and dormancy to bloom. What zone are you in?

I live in Zone 9 in Bakersfield, California and have no trouble with the bearded irises -- except for the SDBs (Standard Dwarf Bearded). The only SDBs that will bloom for me now are those hybridized by Sutton's in Porterville, CA (65 miles away from me). It just doesn't get cold enough here for the other SDBs to bloom for me. We do get down to 32 and sometimes to 25 or so in the winter, but not continuously which the SDBs need. I tried them for years and years and have reluctantly come to the conclusion that I need to give it up. But the SDBs from Sutton's that I get are rebloomers, which means they are usually really vigorous, and they always bloom in the spring for me -- but usually no rebloom. And the intermediates, border bearded, miniature tall bearded, and tall bearded iris usually do really well for me each spring.

I would recommend you check the website of the American Iris Society (AIS), and they have a regional vice president that will covers your area, and if nothing else you could email that person to get your questions answered. They also have a lot of the iris societies listed under "Affiliates" and there might be one for your area. They could give you an idea of which iris will do well in your humidity and which ones to stay away from.
