This weekend, I picked up 'Sew Scrappy vol. 1: Quilts for Fabric Lovers' put out by Better Homes and Gardens at Joann's.
Its got 22 quilt patterns and does contain some templates. For the novice, I find most of the patterns do-able. It probably also has some good variations for those more experienced. I would have liked to see more diagram pictures, but, overall, I can understand the instructions. At $12.99 USD, I think it's worth it. And it should be able to be used with a cost saving coupon from Joann's.
