open pdf files?

I can no longer open pdf files emailed to me. last week I had a form sent to me and the sender had to convert it to WORD & re-send. I have another pdf file from my Godson @ school and I can not open. I was reading an old thread re: pdf file problems but jargon was beyond me. I have adobe reader 7. should I uninstall and re-install?
