Yeap, around here we call them egg gourd plants! I had 1 over 30 yrs. before I had my daughter and lost my seeds-a few summers ago a flower friend brought me a plant and then I got to start growing them again. Their purple bloom is just like the blooms on a egg plant and the leaves also resemble the egg plant. Years ago people would use them in a hens nest for a nest egg-when they turn yellow they are ready to remove from the plant. I will bring my plants inside soon when I get time to repot them, hopefully I won't put them in shock.
Egg Gourd Plant
Easter Egg plant (Solanum ovigerum) an ornamental eggplant. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/1383/ There is also a Nest Egg gourd (Cucurbita pepo) which is a vine with yellow blossoms (http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/54374/)
Are these gourds a hardshell gourd when dry like Langeria Gourd? I need the type that can be dried and painted on.
The nest egg gourd has a hard shell, not as hard as a Langeria type, but hard enough for chicken nest or for painting. The eggplant does not dry well.
