Overwinter Potted Tree?

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I have a small Pin Oak planted in a pot. It is about 18'' tall. It has been so dry here this summer that the ground is like cement to try and dig. Is it possible to overwinter this and plant it in the spring or should I go ahead and plant it now?

They gave these to all the 3rd graders this past spring. This is my granddaughter's tree and I really want to keep it alive!

Thanks for any help!

Photo from when it first leafed out...which surprised me!

Dear Nanny,
You are best to temporarily sinking the pot in the ground for the winter. I would then mulch it well and protect it from squirrels.

Thanks!

You can also cover the pot in wood chips without having to dig a hole. Make sure you keep the wood chips wet.

Pin oaks are extremely hardy. Just place it in a flower bed and cover it completely with shredded leaves.
