Sewing While Flying

Marietta, OH(Zone 6a)

We're flying to SD next month, a long 5 hr+ flight path. Since Hubby has his Nook to keep him company, I thought maybe this would be a good time to try a 'quilt as you go' project or maybe some applique... This is only my 3rd time on a plane, the others were shorter flights.
I checked the TSA list for rules, the only thing I saw was the scissor issue, small blunt end shorter than 4" were allowed, but that's it. Some recommended a dental floss box, to use as a cutter instead of the scissors. Don't see anything for needles..

Anyone here fly with quilting in their purse or carry-on?
