Ruby Star Coneflower

I bought a Ruby Star Coneflower at Lowe's this past Spring for $2.00. I thought was a good buy, not sure now. Well what I would like to know, are the seeds sterile or not? I went out to gather the seeds from it, and what came out of it does not look like the seeds that came from my White Swan coneflower.
