Food for thought

I thought I'd start a thread here for general discussion and posting of informative an interesting links.

I read this one today. Portland, you might be interested in the article as it makes reference to the pay of prison physicians in Oregon.

That is an interesting article, but I don't think prison physicians are overpaid if you compare their salaries to specialists who are in private practice. The average for those in private practice is $340,000.00. Some specialties make much much more. Deduct from their salary malpractice insurance, which can be 4 - 5000 per month depending on their specialty, and believe me, the job is way bigger than the money. And from what I see, the patients are not appreciative and often sue you (nurses, too), swear at you for not giving them narcotics freely, and often have diseases that can make the caretaker very ill and even die. Hepatitis C is the most common, which over % 30 of inmates have, and there is no vaccine for it. The only reason the inmates don't physically assault you, though some try, is that there is a guard with a gun behind them. And the paper work is bizarre. Really, I don't know why physicians would want to do correctional medicine.

Can't argue with that.

I just discovered a fun online magazine. Didn't even know such a thing existed.

This is for the current fall 2010 issue but there's also a spring 2010 issue.

I really like that mag - I bookmarked it since some of the recipes look good. Thanks Gwen!
