Looking forward to 2011

Hello All, I hope you had rewarding summers within your gardens. I had a good year all around with a touch of Late Blight on the tomatos. We have had our first frost,and I have tucked all the tender tropicals away inside.

I was hoping to have a thread about mail order deliveries. Which were good for you this past season seeds and plants.Any new Canadian sorces out there?

Personally I received fantastic plants from Brugmansia Quebec.
Had terrible luck from Vesseys roots/tubers.

Seeds and More from NewFoundland is good.

ostrich fern - dead
razzberry jam hibiscus - doing great
toad lily- its growing
stuttgart canna rhizome - one was moldy and the other one nothing came up..
Over all i wouldn't order from them again, spent 75 buck to end up with 2 plants...

i've ordered from stokes seeds and would recommend them, fast shipping too..

I agree,their seeds are good but the tubers...not so much!
$35 on the Bat Flower Collection- I received two dried out pieces of you know what!
Never again for a tuber or root from them.

Since we have discussed Vesseys, has anyone bought the Mantis tiller? Reviews?
I see they have free shipping now,and the two free attachments.

Oh I have been thinking about a Mantis Tiller for a long time. Almost bought one this spring and changed my mind....again.

Have only ordered a few hostas this year and all were from Hosta Choice Nursery. I have, in the past, ordered successfully from Goldenbrook Hostas, Shades of Green, Fundy Beauties (Hosta Geek), and Floral and Hardy as well. Since I have an excellent source of Hostas (Budd Nursery) a 15 minute drive away, I don't order from more than one place each year.

I've had good seeds from Vesey's, but not this past year - didn't need any new ones I couldn't get locally. I don't buy their plants or bulbs. My church sold some spring planting bulbs from them once which were disappointing.

Anyone know of a good place for Hardy Hibiscus plants or seeds (other then luna or disco) Also Canna roots or seeds.. Checked the ones above but never seem to find hibiscus'

I think that I am getting Canna seeds from T and M.
That is if they ever get it here.

I ordered at end of August and they are shipping today supposedly.
I'll believe it when they come.

When will you start them?

I'm going to have less "pink" and more deep purple & blue next year.

If you are asking about the canna seed start---I will probably not start them until January or February.
I have just taken up the one canna that I had this past season. I am drying the root and will keep it like dahlia roots.
However, I am told that it is just as easy to raise canna from seed.
The canna seeds are supposed to be shipped to me in November,now?
Very strange? as they were on the sale items?

CLScott yes canna seeds are very easy to grow, as long as you nick the seed... The fun part about seeds is they arn't always the same as the parent plant.. this past summer i started 2 ambassadour seeds and both seeds came out a different looking canna.. The flowers look the same from afar but up close one is a pink in the center another is pink dots..

Thats interesting,I didn't know we could get them from seed to bloom in one season. Good news!

well i start mine outside in the middle of may and they bloom mid aug - sept and go till frost.. Some dont bloom first year it depends on the amount of sun and water they get through the season.. But both last year and this year i got blooms from seeds, all flowers seeded also.. If you plant from seed they will seed, some hybrid cannas dont seed and its sad that they dont, but theres enough that do..

So maybe I don't have to start them quite that early?
Or would I not have stronger, larger plants if started early inside?
I was lumping them in with geraniums,begonias and other semi tropicals.
We still have frost and/or snow in May so I would have to start them inside.

the may 24 weekend is when we usually plant our seeds outdoors (its our frost free time) i planted this year the first week of may cause we had crazy warm weather.. (could of even planted the mid of april but i was scared of frost, but we got none) If by the end of may you cant plant outdoors then yes i would say start them indoors.. I have alot that still have seed pods on them and i'm not sure if i will get the seeds before the frost, as it should be here in 2 weeks give or take.. Hopefully i get a few more
