What a surprise....

Lindenhurst, NY

I was in the garden today and noticed a clematis seedling is growing about 2' away from Nelly Moser and Josephine. (maybe Empress Josephine?) It's the first time in 6 yrs of growing clematis that I had a volunteer seedling. How lucky am i? I guess out of about 5,000 seeds that drop one is bound to germinate:-)

Is it common for Clem's to seed themselves?

Lindenhurst, NY

No, it's not common -- they are known to be very hard to germinate sometimes taking up to a year to germinate.

Congrats on your baby! Look forward to see the color.

I saw chart somewhere that indicated that some varieties will be be dormant for 700+ days. I have a dedicated planter that I annually add seed to and I remove seedlings as they appear.
