mosaic on old wrought iron patio table

we are new to this craft and welcome suggestions about how we could transform this "ugly" table top into something
attractive and useful..it has been painted many times...and I don't like painting it..

My husband thinks we could just apply the tile/broken china straight on top of the wrought iron...without
a ply wood base.

any suggestions are welcome
