First Frost or before?

I'm sure this information is covered elsewhere but I couldn't find the answer. Is it necessary to wait for first frost to dig the dahlia and canna tubers? I want to get a jump on digging cleaning and storing for next year.

I did a bit of research on this earlier and you can do it before the first frost but you need to cut them down to just a few inches and then leave it for at least a week (I think) to let the tuber develop buds. But I am by no means an expert and I am sure some others can give you a more confident and experienced answer.

Thank you Kelly!

I wait until mine have just a very light frost. I hate digging them up when they are all slime!

You can dig them at any time once the new tubers have developed. It is very difficult to see the new eyes though unless you let them sit for a few days.
