Ginkgo, boy or girl ?

Dahlonega, GA

Is there a way to tell the difference? It was sold as a boy , but I'm really nervous about putting it out and later having a girl. I have it in a five gallon bucket and it's about 8' tall .

fall and are shed with the leaves."

" In the spring the male produces catkin-like "cones" that release
sperm-bearing pollen to be carried by the wind. The female tree in turn
produces a yellow "fruit" that is shed with the leaves in the fall."

Ginkgos take decades before producing cones. You have to trust the seller and plant it.

Ditto to granitegneiss. There's no way of telling until it is old enough to produce either seeds or pollen cones.

Ok if it can take the central Texas alkaline , rocky soil , It will go in the ground this winter . any Ideas on that ?
Nice to know how long it takes to fruit , I can handle that .

If you bought a named cultivar and were told it's a boy then you're pretty safe (assuming the plant was labeled correctly of course). If it's seedling grown then I'd be skeptical since nobody could know what it is until it is older, but you've got a 50/50 shot. And even if it is female--are there other ginkgoes nearby? If not then there'd be no males to pollinate it so you wouldn't have to worry about fruit.

Ecrane , I hadn't even thought of it not being pollinated. Doubt if there is one in ten miles of there .I bought it from a mom and pop nursery , no tag . I'll let my son deal with it , I'll never see it mature and would be so old I wouldn't care anyway after all you-all have taught me .It will be his problem then . Thanks for something else to think about . No male . Duh
