Tying a Quilt

Have you ever done this? If so, what is/are your opinions?

I've heard of tying quilts before, but didn't think much of it. Now that I'm doing more quilt blocks, etc., I'd like to get the quilt top I do have done all sandwiched. Thing is, going to a quilt shop to do it is a bit expensive (at least for me). So, now I am seriously considering giving it a try on the red/white/blue quilt top I finished earlier this year . . .
