Understanding pet behavior

I'm wondering about the cause of some pet behaviors. A lot of things I know are instinctual, but others I just can't figure out. One of them is that our 2 labs constantly put their paw up on us when we pet them. Does anyone else experience this? Is it just labs? - we've never had anything but labs, so we don't know. Thanks for any thoughts.
