Z8 Dorman red raspberries are tasteless :-(

I was so excited to hear of a raspberry that does well in the southeastern states, developed at Mississippi State University. I planted 5 plants where I can water them and another 5 where I can't. The 5 vines where I could give them water to get established did very well, and the 5 where I couldn't did marginally. I was excited to harvest the berries, but they were tasteless. I mixed them with some buggy blackberries and made a syrup, so I didn't waste them.

Could this be a problem with the soil (can I fix this?).

No, it's the variety. Last year, I attended a session given by our local Extension agent on the types of fruit that would grow well in our county. Raspberries are not recommended for our area, but he stated that people consider that a challenge and will try anyway. He said the variety most likely to grow and produce fruit was Dorman Red. He also said it was a very bland variety and in his opinion not worth the effort.
