I have some Siberian iris growing among groupings of Hosta. The iris leaves and flowers are great while the hosta is maturing, but when it's the Hosta's time to shine, the iris leaves are distracting. I cut the iris leaves back by half (after the flowers bloomed and the seed pods were forming) to better display the hosta, but now I'm afraid it might have been too early and I could be harming the iris plants.
When is the proper time to cut back iris?
Many thanks.
How early can you cut back siberian iris?
All irises need their leaves for as long as possible, including siberians. They get food to grow larger and flower better from the leaves.
The leaves should be left up as long as possible.
The best time to cut back siberian iris leaves is late fall, or even early spring. You can cut the flower stalks down though.
Ultimately, you probably didn't hurt them much. You might want to move them, though, to where you can leave the leaves on, without distracting from your hosta.
Thank you- that is helpful information.
You're very welcome. Good luck with them. Siberians are my favorite irises.
