I have never seen these beetles before today and found them all over my coreopsis.
Help! Does anyone know what these beetles are?
I don't know what it is but it sure it cute with those pink stripes. Except for the munched leaves and beetle poop left behind...
Try Calligrapha californica (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/25m697y
Thanks, suunto, for the link. That one looks a lot like mine but not exactly the same. I wish it would tell you if they are friend or foe.
I still think that they are Calligrapha, the subspecies Calligrapha californica coreopsivora (see http://tinyurl.com/3226k4f for an example) is well known as a pest on coreopsis. Just remember that like humans, beetles within the same species can vary quite a bit in individual appearance.
The second link is great, too, and now I believe you are right. Especially since they like coreopsis and that is the only plant they are chewing on. I don't know now whether to get after them or not? It doesn't say anything about this beetle becoming a problem.
Thanks for you helpful answer.
