Dear All,
I love mums and last year (and this year before noticing what was happening to last year's plantings) planted a number of mums. They are doing fine but slowly and surely taking whatever space available including completely riding over other plants. I don't want to pull out perfectly gorgeous plants that will have lots of flowers in the fall, but what do I use to stop them from running over everything?
I was thinking of using some edging to delineate mums from other plants, but that includes putting small circles of edging around shrubs and trees nearby.
Any ideas on what to do would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Mickey
mums and how to contain them.
You could divide them every two or three years and move them to another part of the garden or pot them up. If they are multiplying that well they must be very happy. Give some away if all else fails. Mulch around them and pinch them back every time they grow three inches until 4th of july. They will make more buds and maybe not spread so fast. Also deadhead when they finish blooming so they will not seed about. Good luck with them.
Thank you, ngam. Great advice! Will be in Mass in a week. Would you like some mums? :)
Mickey
LOL, no thanks I have no room for any more either. ^_^
Also if you pinch them they will be more compact and less bushy. Where in MA will you be? Come to the RU on July 18th?

That "pinch them every time they grow three inches" is excellent advice - I've never heard it said that way before!
