Need help with a cell phone

I won an HTC Hero 6250 phone from a local cell phone provider. Problem is, we already have a cell phone provider we are happy with. I want to sell this phone, but as I understand, it is locked to be used through only this local cell phone company. Is there any why to unlock the phone so I might be able to sell it on ebay. I don't want to trash a perfectly good phone just because we can't get it unlocked.
