Cleaning amber Chinese unicorn

Madison, AL

I have a Chinese unicorn bought on eBay supposedly made of amber. It arrived and appears deep red and light can shine through it. It seemed to be caked in the seams with what looked like dirt, so I (apparently mistakenly) soaked it to clean it. Now it appears as if every line and seam is caked again - so I guess it was not dirt. Does anyone have any idea what to do with this thing? I am wondering if it is actually made of plastic and not amber.
