amount of space needed between plants

Emerald Hills, CA(Zone 9b)

I have purchased several new clematis recently and will be putting them in the ground soon. I have seen many pictures posted here with multiple vines growing together so that begs the question, how far apart do the root balls need to be spaced? Also, does the size of the plants change the spacing requirements? Mine are mostly in 1 to 2 gallon pots. I'd love to have at least two different plants growing together so I welcome any advice to make sure I don't 'blow it'.

thanks,
d

One foot apart for 1-2 gallon sizes are just fine..remember to keep your plants moist for survival after planting..clematis roots like to stay moist ..NOT SOGGY but moist ..that is what people are trying to convey when they say clematis like their roots "To stay cool"...Jeanne
