While playing golf at the Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, Cal. yesterday, I saw a plant that I know to be a Pride of Madiera. While looking at it I saw several pieces of cactus that appeared to be Prickly Pear cactus. I followed the stem of the cactus to where it came off the main trunk of the Pride of Madiera. Does anyone know if this is a common type of cross?

Far from being a "common" type of cross, it's entirely impossible. What you observed had to have been cactus pads physically stuck to the echium plant.
