Last spring, 2009, I decided that I just couldn't bear to drag my dahlias up and down for the basement twice a year. So I just abandoned them, but like a lot of things in our basement they were just left alone rather than thrown out..
Well, just yesterday we did a bit of dumpster detail in the basement, and imagine my surprise when I found sprouting dahlias greeting me where I expected just plastic bags of dirt! Yes, they are a bit weak and lanky from the low light level, but they seem to have absorbed a bit of moisture from the basement leaks and are definately alive. (Some calla lily bulbs also.) That is just oo much optimism to ignore - I will plant them out again this year!
