Shade Tree For Backyard

Wauseon, OH(Zone 5a)

I would like to know what would be a nice shade tree for the backyard, one that is clean and gets around 40 to 70 feet tall. I really don't care for Maples. The only thing I don't like about Maples is there seed pods. I live in a city.I would like a deep rooting tree and a hardwood tree.

You would really like Nyssa sylvatica - Blackgum.

American Yellowwood (Cladrastis kentukea) could also fit your interests - and it flowers prolifically.

Try a Catalpa. Yes, they can be a bit messy at times but the blooms are nice, they provide a nice canopy of shade, are easy to maintain and have a nice full structure. There is a purple-leafed and yellow-leafed cultivar which might not have the seed pods as do the species.

Pin oaks are nice.
